The Mexican band joins a group of honorees announced to date that includes designer Carolina Herrera, Beautyblender creator Rea Ann Silva and NBA legend Carmelo Anthony.
"Los Angeles Azules have literally moved audiences around the world through their music and messages for decades," said Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of HHF. Hailing from Iztapalapa, Los Ángeles Azules are the main exponents of cumbia music worldwide; they have taken their music to the most important international stages and festivals such as Vive Latino and Coachella. In addition, they are the first Mexican group to enter YouTube's Billion Views Club, and the only one to have two videos with more than one billion views with the clips "Nunca es suficiente" in collaboration with Natalia Lafourcade (+2 billion views) and "Mis sentimientos" in collaboration with Ximena Sariñana. The Mejia Avante brothers have also collaborated with other artists including Julieta Venegas, Carla Morrison, Gloria Trevi, Ana Torroja, Fito Paez, Miguel Bose, Alejandro Fernandez, among others.
"We are very grateful to the Hispanic Heritage Awards for this great recognition of our long artistic trajectory. We also want to thank all our fans and people who have supported us all this time, because it is thanks to them and those who enjoy and dance to our songs that we will continue to build this great career," said Elías Mejía Avante.
With more than 17 million monthly listeners, Los Ángeles Azules have positioned themselves as one of the 500 most listened artists on Spotify worldwide and have taken their music all over the continent, visiting the most important cities in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and the United States, among other countries.
In 2023, Los Ángeles Azules received their second Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Cumbia/Vallenato Album category for their album "Cumbia del Corazón", and also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Billboard Awards that year. In 2024, the band earned four nominations for El Premio Lo Nuestro and a nomination at the Latin American Music Awards; in addition, The Latin Recording Academy announced that Los Ángeles Azules will be this year's winners of the Award for Musical Excellence.
The HHAs, supported by 40 national Hispanic-serving institutions, were established by the White House in 1988 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S. and will be broadcast (for the ninth consecutive year) on PBS.
